Re: Deck Posts -- To Bury Or Not To Bury LOL, alot of what I do is overkill, but never been bck to look at any problems either so what the heck Only thing I see as overkill is the #4 rebar instead of typical 16d nails and 5000psi instead of 4000 psi, but price for me is the same either way so naturally gonna go with the stronger stuff to make life hell for whomever tries to tear it out.

Re: Ground Level Deck Either do what NW Architect says or don't do the deck. Anything but foundation grade lumber will be severely rotted in 10 years or so. The composite decking is too expensive to be putting over floor joists that will start the decomposition process the day they are installed.

What is a “Composite” Fence Post? Posted on April 14, 2010 by Gary Duncan. For the past several years I have been involved in the introduction of a composite line post for electric fencing. Fiberglass, a common composite material, consists of glass fibers embedded in a resin matrix (a glass-plastic composite). In comparison, the two materials that make up PasturePro posts are polypropylene and wood (a wood-plastic composite). Composites are really not all that new to society or agriculture.
For a simple rectangular ground-level deck, all you may need to visualize it is to lay out a string line with stakes to get the sense of the size. When measuring, keep in mind that the typical deck joist spacing is 16" O.C. (the distance between the centers of the tops of two adjacent joists).

If your deck is more than a couple of feet off the ground, you may want to wrap the posts in PVC to match the rest of the deck. You’ll need two 1x6s and two 1x8s for each post. Our pros avoid material thinner than 3/4 in. because PVC expands and contracts more than wood, and it’s hard to keep the seams together using thinner material.
This is the same type of wood that is used for retaining walls. The pressure treatment companies insist that these posts will last longer in the ground than the deck frame that is built above it and this practice is accepted by the IRC code.
