Whatever you do, do not fix the deck like this. This is how my cantilever deck was "fixed" by the previous owner. They cut through the joists and attached connections to it like in the pic. It has no support at the edge of the deck so if there's enough people, the deck could collapse.
You've talked it over, but you're hesitant to add on as the cost and inconvenience is too great, and you really don't want an "addition" per se. What can you do? Try a cantilevered micro-addition.
Second-Story Balcony Costs It’s difficult to estimate a realistic price range without taking materials, size, height, cost of local labor, and access points into account. However, it’s a safe bet that your finished balcony will have cost somewhere between $15 and $35 per square foot.
A balcony can be a delightful feature to add to your home — but ensuring it complements the rest of the house is crucial, says Clive Fewins. Not every self-builder can run to the expense of the balcony on a new 300m² contemporary-style self-build house in Gloucestershire, where the cantilevered structure is 15 metres long, curved, and entirely constructed from glass and steel.
This 2:1 backspan to cantilever ratio is incorporated in Table R502.3.3(2) in the 2015 IRC, which specifies joist sizing based on the desired cantilever span, ground snow loads, and joist spacing. Following this prescriptive path, 12-foot-long 2x10s spaced 16 inches on-center would be needed to frame a 48-inch-wide balcony built in an area with ...
When compared to installing a few posts and foundations, there is little return for the cost and labor associated with a retro-fitted balcony deck. If considering this type of deck during the home construction, bear in mind the difficulty in the future to repair or rebuild it.
What is the approximate cost of putting in about a 10' x 14' wood deck on the 2nd floor of a house? We want to put a wood balcony/deck on the 2nd floor of the back of our house, replacing an existing large window with French doors to go out to the deck. There is an existing wood patio cover with posts down to a concrete patio below in this location.
Cantilevering deck joists allows you to build larger decks at lower cost. They are safe, but you must follow some special rules. ... The cantilever length. ... you’d need to upgrade all the joists and the ledger from 2x8s to 2x10s.² This brute force approach would add approximately $4 more per joist; for a deck 16ft wide (including the 17 ...
While the total cost of a bump out is less than that of a full-size addition, a bump out will cost more on a square foot basis. This is because a large part of the cost is in initiating the project, making drawings, pulling permits, opening up the side of the house, pouring a foundation footer, calling in an electrician to move wires, and so on. You may need to do the same things with a bump out as you would do with an addition, just on a smaller scale.
Plans for the balcony called for a 2-inch concrete topping slab over waterproofing and a double layer of OSB sheathing supported by cantilevered 1?3/4-inch by 11?7/8-inch LVL joists, which were untreated.
Repairing Termite Damaged Joists On Cantilever Balcony... Hey guys. Long time lurker. ... It is a drastic cost difference (connect board A to board B and tie into balcony vs remove interior drywall ceiling, remove board B, install new board A, repair ceiling) so I figured I would get a second opinion. ... I want to add a 2 x 6 cantilevered alcove to my existing deck sistering 2x6 joists. The cantilever is the 2'. I'm making a little alcove to house my average size grill. It will have a rail added to the back and one side (the other side butts up to a stepped up deck level.) How far back beyond the ...
Looking at options for adding 3 rear balconies to a brownstone co-op on the upper west side of Manhattan. Joists unfortunately run perpendicular to a cantilever so I am curious about engineered solutions that would reduce the back span requirement.
It sounds like you're asking how far a balcony can cantilever before it needs to be supported by a column(s). Using the widest typical lumber dimensions found at the usual hardware stores...I'm guessing that's a 2x12.
A cantilevered balcony measuring, say, one-and-a-half metres by 1.2 metres is likely to cost you between £3,000 and £3,800. You should certainly be able to recover that when you sell. You will need to apply for planning permission and the success of your application will depend largely upon where you live.
The floor joists inside the home are extended outside, beyond the walls of the house, to support the deck floor. The strength of the joists in the balcony are dependent on a considerable “backspan” of the same joists into the structure, generally a minimum of 3 times the length of the joists exposed at the balcony.

To make it usable at all it will still need to extended and cantilevered out from the existing facade. I imagine the third floor stucco facade to remain unchanged. The second floor however will be completely scraped. The balcony will extend outward from a flat facade. The sides of the balcony will be perpendicular to the facade.
The cantilevered version of this deck still wants 2×8 joists (2x6s would not suffice)², but it creates a stronger structure. The maximum span for SYP PT 2x8s 12” o/c is 14’ 2”², so a girder at 14’ 0” is close to the maximum. Conversely, a two foot cantilever puts the beam only 12’ out, well short of the limit.
